Title: Some Perspectives on Technical Education in India.

The talk will describe the growth of technical education in India in terms of the output of engineers at the Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral levels. This quantitative growth has accelerated in the last twenty years and in the process, quality has suffered. Factors which contribute to institutional excellence and quality in educational programs are discussed. These include the need for well-qualified and motivated faculty, adequate infrastructure and funding, appropriate structure of governance and significant academic autonomy.
