Ph.D Programme in Science Education - 2021



    This is to inform you that the HBCSE graduate admissions committee has decided to conduct the Ph.D. entrance examination on Sunday, September 5, 2021, between 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.


    All candidates should read the COVID-19 advisory issued by the state (where your exam centre is located) and strictly adhere to the guidelines, especially in case of interstate travel. Please contact us immediately with "change of exam centre" requests if any.

    We are looking for enthusiastic people with 

    • interest in science and mathematics education
    • flair for teaching and writing
    • curiosity about how students learn
    • critical and analytical skills
    • commitment to improve education
    Note: This is a programme in education research. It is not a pure or applied science research programme.
    Science and mathematics teachers and educators are also encouraged to apply. For part of the programme, teachers and educators can undertake research while stationed at their parent institutions. However, they would have to spend a minimum of two years in person at HBCSE.

    • Discipline-based education research in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, astronomy and environmental science education


    M.Sc. (in any subject), M.E., M.Tech. or a Master's degree (M.A./ M.S.W.) in any of the social/ behavioural sciences/ psychology/ linguistics/ sociology/ economics/ anthropology, M.Ed. with a science or social sciences/ humanities undergraduate degree.

    Exam Fee (Non-Refundable) 

    For online and manual applications
    • Female Candidates: ₹350/- 
    • Male Candidates: ₹850/-
    • Other Candidates: ₹350/-

    Important Dates

    • Application submission deadline: May 5, 2021 (extended date)
    • Written test: September 05, 2021
    • Interview: To be announced soon


    • ₹31000/- per month till registration, ₹35000/- per month post-registration
    • Additionally, 24% HRA in lieu of on-campus institute accommodation
    • Annual contingency grant of ₹40000/- for research related expenses


    Admissions are made initially for six months, renewable every six months up to a maximum of five years. Continuation is subject to completion of milestones as specified by the subject board. 
    Offline applicants should send the completed form along with one passport size photograph and a demand draft (non-refundable) of the applicable amount in favour of “Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, TIFR” to: Graduate School Admissions - 2021,

    A written test for eligible applicants will be held at different centres around the country: Chennai, Bengaluru, Pune, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bhopal and Guwahati (provisional). Those who qualify will be called for an in-person interview.
