Area of Research: Cognitive Aspects of Problem Solving in Introductory Physics.
Our research aims to understand the underlying cognitive mechanisms of the problem solving approaches of introductory physics students. The guiding framework we adopt comes mainly from the educational work of Frederick Reif. Broadly it falls under the information processing paradigm of cognitive science. The framework advocates a systematic approach to the learning and teaching of problem solving. The basic premise is that learning in any domain becomes efficient and easier if the underlying component skills pertaining to the domain are elucidated and explicitly instructed.
