High School Teachers Workshop on “Procedural Understanding in Physics”
Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) is a National Centre of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai. The broad goals of the Centre are to promote equity and excellence in science and mathematics education from primary school to undergraduate college level. Three decades after its inception, HBCSE has emerged as the premier institution in the country for research and development in science, technology and mathematics education. It is India's nodal centre for Olympiad programmes in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Astronomy.
It is believed that procedural understanding has an important role in practical physics. This understanding helps us in solving simple as well as complex real life practical problems. I believe that high school teachers can play a very important role in helping students to develop Procedural understanding at an early stage of their education. In this regard, it has been observed that while school teachers are prepared to help students with respect to the development of conceptual understanding and experimental skills, a very small number of school teachers are aware of the contents, methods and strategies related to the development of procedural understanding and experimental problem solving ability.
I have initiated a research and developmental project in the field of ‘Procedural Understanding in Physics’ at HBCSE, as a part of sincere efforts to improve the quality of physics education at the school level. A number of teachers/scientists from all over India contribute to this project and I am looking forward to involve and support interested teachers as a part of development groups.
Under this project, I am happy to announce first workshop for high school teachers on “Procedural Understanding in Physics” to be held at HBCSE, Mumbai during September 10 -12, 2009 (Thursday-Saturday). Please find some more details regarding the workshop on the link at the bottom of this page.
I am happy to invite high school teachers, who teach PHYSICS section of the science syllabus (STD 8, 9, 10th) at any school, to participate in the workshop. This workshop will begin with exposure and enrichment sessions. There will be teacher development and presentation sessions along with other activities.
Please send me the completed application form (which can be downloaded with a link at the bottom of this page) to reach on or before August 29, 2009. I will inform the teachers regarding the selection by September 4, 2009.
All the teachers will be given the registration kit and free tea/snacks/Lunch during all the three days of the workshop. Accommodation may be provided to some teachers as per the requirement.
